Licking the Walls gives form to shared time and place. Conceived by Camille Henrot while she was in residence at Callie’s alongside Jaeger, Sutela, and Teachworth, the exhibition explores affinities between the artists’ practices. The works articulate tensions between interior and exterior—both physical and psychological. Many of the works were completed or conceptualized while at Callie’s; all of the works will exhibited for the first time in Berlin.

The works on view include painting, print, sculpture, and sound. Created at Callie’s, paintings from Henrot’s series Soon were inspired by the interiority of ultrasound imaging—pictures made by sound waves echoing against liquid and tissue. Analisa Teachworth’s sculptural works probe the porosity between our inner selves and social fabric. The structure of a chair speaks to the absent ancestral body, while a series of Teachworth’s sculptures made from floral bouquet paper seem to sail off the wall. Elizabeth Jaeger’s vessels are themselves held within frames that both support and contain. Jenna Sutela and Elvia Wilk’s collaborative sound work nnother (2021), from which the exhibition takes its title, probes questions of co-dependence and symbiosis. As the exhibition addresses communion and autonomy, the body-container emerges as a recurring motif.

The exhibition runs September 15th - October 1st, with opening hours from Thursday to Saturday, from 1 to 7pm. Entry to the exhibition is free of charge.

Camille Henrot was born in Paris in 1978, and lives and works in New York City. A 2012 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship resulted in her film Grosse Fatigue, for which she was awarded the Silver Lion at the 55th Biennale di Venezia. She is the recipient of the 2014 Nam June Paik Award and the 2015 Edvard Munch Award. Her 2014 installation The Pale Fox at Chisenhale Gallery, London went on to travel to institutions including Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; Bétonsalon – Centre for art and research, Paris; and Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster. In 2017, Henrot was given carte blanche at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, where she presented Days Are Dogs. Henrot has had additional solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Salzburg, Austria; Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, Belgium; New Museum, New York; Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin; New Orleans Museum of Art; Fondazione Memmo, Rome; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Japan; and Art Sonje in Seoul, Korea. She has participated in biennial exhibitions of Venice, Lyon, Berlin and Sydney. Henrot’s exhibition Mouth to Mouth is currently on display at Munch Museum, Oslo.

Elizabeth Jaeger was born in 1988 in San Francisco, California. Solo exhibitions include Holes (2021) and before making profound statements use a pencil with a good eraser (2020) at Jack Hanley Gallery and itself and else (2022) and Brine (2019) at Klemm’s in Berlin. The artist has participated in numerous group shows, including Clay Pop at Jeffery Deitch (2021) and How To Survive at the Sprengel Museum (2020), Hannover, DE. Other group exhibitions include Mirror Cells, the Whitney Museum of American Art (2016); Greater New York, MoMA PS1, New York (2015); In Practice: Fantasy Can Invent Nothing New, Sculpture Center, New York (2016); and Zombies: Pay Attention!, the Aspen Art Museum (2018). Jaeger co-founded and operates Peradam with Sam Cate-Gumpert, a publishing house specializing in artists’ books. She lives and works in New York.

Jenna Sutela is a Finnish artist who lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited in international venues including Castello di Rivoli, Italy; the Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; Moderna Museet, Sweden; Serpentine Galleries, London; the Shanghai Biennale, China; and the Liverpool Biennial, United Kingdom. From 2019-2021, she was a Visiting Artist at the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology. Sutela’s exhibition Stellar Nursery is currently on display at Schering Stiftung, Berlin and includes her new installation work HMO Nutrix (2022), created during her residency at Callie’s. Sutela lives and works in Berlin.

Analisa Teachworth was born in 1987 in Detroit, Michigan and is now based between New York City and Berlin. She holds a BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Teachworth’s works have been exhibited at institutions including The Shed, New York; FRAGILE, Berlin; MoMA PS1, New York; Hamburger Bahnhof Staatliche Museen, Berlin; Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and The New Museum, New York. She was a guest lecturer at the SAAS-FEE SUMMER INSTITUTE OF ART for the 2022 season, Deep Ecology in the Cognitive Capitalocene.

Elvia Wilk is a writer and editor living in New York. She is author of the novel Oval and the book of essays, Death By Landscape, both published by Soft Skull Press. She contributes to Frieze, Artforum, Bookforum, n+1, Granta, The Paris Review Daily, BOMB, 4Columns, Mousse, The Atlantic, and The New York Review of Books. She is the recipient of a 2019 Andy Warhol Arts Writers grant and a 2020 fellowship at the Berggruen Institute. From 2012 to 2016 she was a founding editor at uncube magazine, and from 2016 to 2018 she was the publications editor for transmediale and a contributing editor at Rhizome. Currently, she is a contributing editor at e-flux journal and teaches at the University of the Arts Berlin, Eugene Lang College, and City College of New York.
