Please join Bard College Berlin at Callie’s on Saturday, May 14th, 2022, for a lecture by Omri Boehm and a film screening by Diana El Jeiroudi.

Celebrating the conclusion of Bard College Berlin’s course on research-based artmaking and migration, philosopher Omri Boehm will deliver a keynote lecture, followed by a conversation with sociologist Teresa Koloma Beck.

Based on his forthcoming book, Radical Universalism, Boehm’s lecture will touch on a revised definition of universalism, reconceptualizing the notion and pursuit of human unification on the basis of universalist values. Boehm’s 2020 book Haifa Republic: A Democratic Future for Israel received international acclaim for its radical critique of the two-state solution and its alternative vision for Israel’s political and cultural future.

Teresa Koloma Beck is a sociologist at Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg. Her field of research focuses on the everyday dynamics of violence and post-war societies, globalization, and the post-/decolonial condition of our present.

At 9pm, Diana El Jeiroudi’s documentary, Republic of Silence (2021, 183 minutes) will be screened. Created over the course of 12 years, the film bears witness to a personal story of exile through a mosaic of archival footage, portraits, and intimate narrativized experiences. Republic of Silence premiered at the 2021 Venice Biennale and has been shown at DOK Leipzig, Germany, and Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland.

Diana El Jeiroudi is a Syrian-born, Berlin-based independent filmmaker and producer. Her documentary films include The Pot (2005) and Dolls, A Woman from Damascus (2007). In 2017, El Jeiroudi was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, making her the first Syrian to receive this honor.

The lecture and film screening are part of The Diasporic Pitch, an event organized by students from Bard College Berlin, Dorothea von Hantelmann, and Marion Detjen. An exhibition of student artworks will be on view throughout the evening.
