Paraphrase of a Shadow
On February 28th, 2023, Callie’s will host the performance Paraphrase of a Shadow, a work-in-progress conceived by resident Colin Self in collaboration with Bobbi Salvör Menuez.
Throughout February, Self and Menuez are developing Paraphrase of a Shadow, an intermezzo about transdimensional communication. Working with the talismanic qualities and narrative symbolism of the glove, the performance employs self-made puppets, live video, and the voice to weave scenes of place, action, yearnings, rescue, triumph, homage, anxieties, repose, abduction, and Cupid.
While in residence at Callie’s, Self has been working on a series of projects that explore encryption, collective voices, and tulpamancy—the act of embodying a shadow self through meditation. They have also been experimenting with the materials and mechanics of puppetry to create a series of small-scale avatars and large-scale wearables.
