Book Launch
Tuesday, April 23, 6 PM

Please join us on Tuesday, April 23rd for the launch of Isabel Lewis and Callie’s first publication, An occasion to consider a book. The publication brings Lewis’s multi-sensory and collaborative practice to the printed page, ultimately reflecting on how a book might be performed in the world. The evening will include a conversation between Lewis and Dan Solbach, the publication’s designer.

Isabel Lewis is an artist whose work collapses boundaries and centers collective embodiment. Widely recognized for having expanded the field of contemporary art, Lewis refers to many of her works as “occasions”: immersive social gatherings that encompass choreography, performance, music, and discursive formats. Consistent with the artist’s interest in hosting, storytelling, and collaboration, An occasion to consider a book is an invitation to reflect on how a book might be performed in the world. It is Lewis’s first publication and marks the first time she conceptually addresses the physicality of the format, imbuing it with her expansive sense of the choreographic.

Isabel Lewis was born in 1981 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Her work has been presented at Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève; Kunsthalle Basel; Frieze London; Liverpool Biennial; the Institute of Contemporary Arts London (ICA); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Turin; Tanz im August Berlin; Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Tate Modern London; Gropius Bau, Berlin; Ming Contemporary Art Museum Shanghai; Ocean Space Venice by TBA21–Academy; Sophiensaele Berlin, MUSEION of Modern and Contemporary Art Bolzano; E-WERK Luckenwalde Berlin; Haus der Kunst Munich; and Kunsthalle Zurich. Lewis lives and works in Berlin.

Isabel Lewis’s publication, An occasion to consider a book, was generously supported by Stiftung Kunstfonds. It is proudly co-published with Edition Taube, Munich, and Floating Opera Press, Berlin.
